Urban Development Day on 10 May - Events in Chemnitz
On Saturday, 10 May, on the Day of Urban Development Promotion, the City of Chemnitz's Urban Planning and Property Office is offering activities on two projects in the course of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, which were created with funds from urban development promotion:
Garage Campus, guided tours at 10am and 11am
On Saturday, 10 May, interested parties are invited to explore the Campus site. The Garage Campus team is offering 45-minute guided tours. These start at 10am and 11am. The meeting point is the entrance at Zwickauer Straße 164.
From the Kappel depot to the intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025: this is how the Garage Campus presents itself in a new guise. Extensive renovations to the former administration building, extensive roof refurbishment including the entire roof truss, new skylights and much more ensure a successful conversion of the former CVAG depot on Zwickauer Straße.
The garage campus is already available for specialist conferences and many public events this year. The ongoing permanent exhibition "#3000Garagen" and planned projects with schools, universities and training companies are part of the sustainable concept for the development of a cultural and meeting location. The garage campus also offers plenty of potential and space for creative ideas.
Kreativhof Stadtwirtschaft Chemnitz, guided tour 3 pm
On Saturday, 10 May at 3 pm, interested parties are invited to a one-hour guided tour through the buildings and courtyards of the Stadtwirtschaft. The meeting point is in front of Jakobstraße 46.
With the revitalisation of the "Stadtwirtschaft" industrial estate on the Sonnenberg - consisting of several buildings and large outdoor areas - this area is being converted into a meeting place for creative people as an intervention area for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. This year, 25 associations and initiatives are already planning to hold programmes and events in the Stadtwirtschaft. The "#3000Garagen" project is currently rehearsing a theatre play there. An exhibition of light installations by Düsseldorf artist Mischa Kuball will start at the beginning of May.
Around ten long-term rental contracts have already been signed with new creative users. The outdoor areas will be designed as communal spaces. The "Stadtwirtschaft" made a first convincing impression during a guided tour for guests of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and with a light illumination on the evening of the opening ceremony in January.
Day of urban development promotion
The Day of Urban Development is celebrated throughout Germany. Under the title "Vibrant places, strong communities", numerous events are held throughout Germany to communicate the many opportunities for citizen participation, present the achievements and successes to the public and honour the commitment of all those involved in the municipalities. The day of action is a joint initiative of the federal government, the federal states, the German Association of Cities and Towns and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities.
Urban development funding is one of the most important instruments of urban development for strong neighbourhoods, an attractive living environment and a good life in the neighbourhood. The federal government, the federal states and local authorities work together to ensure that homes - in both small and large cities - remain beautiful and liveable. Great importance is attached to urban development funding, which is financed on a partnership basis.
Urban development promotion in Chemnitz
Urban renewal in Chemnitz has been visibly supported by urban development programmes and city funds for 35 years. On the ground in the city's neighbourhoods, stakeholders from many areas are involved in local development processes and individual projects. Public and private refurbishments of buildings and infrastructure are made possible by subsidies. Urban development funding in Chemnitz makes it possible to meet structural, economic, social and ecological challenges.
To date, more than 410 million euros in grants from various programmes have been awarded to redevelopment areas in the Gründerzeit, the city centre, districts in the Heckert area and the revitalisation of brownfield sites. Neighbourhood management teams are active on site with citizens on behalf of the urban planning office. Redevelopment agencies and agencies advise building owners or new investors, encourage cooperative housing projects and support small businesses in the neighbourhood.
In keeping with the title of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 "C the Unseen", intervention areas such as the Garage Campus, the Stadtwirtschaft, Schillerplatz and the green corridor along the Pleißenbach were created by 2025 through urban development funding - as places for makers, for creative ideas, culture and for healthier leisure time in green spaces by the water.
