Varied supporting programme for the German Road Cycling Championships

One week before the start of the Tour de France: German Road Cycling Championships from 23 to 25 June - title fights in five disciplines - city sports circuit for amateur cyclists - varied supporting programme

One week before the start of the Tour de France in the twin city of Düsseldorf, the elite of German road cycling will meet in Chemnitz for the final performance test - the German Championships. The city is thus building on its great cycling tradition. With the support of the Chemnitzer Polizeisportverein e. V., the Radsportverein Chemnitz e. V. and the Stadtsportbund Chemnitz e. V., the city of Chemnitz is organising the biggest cycling event of the national sporting year. More than 300 cyclists are expected in Chemnitz.

A cycling race in the city - undoubtedly an experience for the fans. And in addition to the major sporting event, they will also be well entertained with a varied supporting programme in the city area.

Hobby cyclists on the road course

Before the women's road race, there will be a cycling tour for everyone on Saturday, 24 June, starting at 11 a.m. - the "Sportstadtrunde", organised by the Chemnitz City Sports Association. Anyone who feels fit enough to complete a 19.4 kilometre lap on the original route of the championship can take part. The start, finish and route are identical to the road race. The amateur cyclists can complete one lap in the public traffic area in compliance with the StVO. The route will be secured by the police. Due to the challenging nature of the route, participants must be aged 14 and over. Participation is free of charge and the sports ribbon (photo attached) is the admission ticket. With the wristband, the city sports association wants to ring in the cycling summer in Chemnitz, fuel the anticipation of the major sporting event and promote the event vigorously. The wristband for the DM is available from the SSBC, the Education and Sports Office and the clubs CPSV e. V. and RSV Chemnitz e.V. as well as the Tourist Information Centre.

Supporting programme: take part, watch and celebrate

In addition to the activities in the start/finish area on Hartmannplatz, you can get active yourself in Innere Klosterstraße, for example, and obtain a high-wheel driving licence or compete against celebrities on two official Team erdgas 2012 training machines in the "Super Speed" action area and, in the best case, win something.

Chemnitz bicycle dealers will be presenting their latest products on Hartmannplatz. Good tips are included. A test area for test rides with the new bike is also available. The trend towards e-bikes continues unabated.
e-bikes - which are not only a means of transport but also a piece of sports equipment. The latest developments will be presented. Many well-known brands will be at the start.

The Jakobikirchplatz is an "extremely" sporty place. Here, 6-time trial world champion and 19-time German champion Marco Hösel from Thalheim will be demonstrating his breathtaking mountain bike course and offering workshops for children. The bikes are provided.

No less spectacular are the performances of the riders in the Mini-Drome on the action area of Eins Energie in Sachsen GmbH & Co. KG on Düsseldorfer Platz. Whether it's a circuit or an individual time trial, the miniature velodrome makes exciting and breathtaking competitions possible - the facility allows top speeds of 40 km/h. DJ ein with live music in the chill-out area provides the right amount of relaxation.

In addition to the many entertainment options and gastronomic offerings, there is also a very special culinary highlight on Sunday, 25 June. From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., you can enjoy a cyclists' breakfast together with active cyclists and hobby cyclists on the action area in Innere Klosterstraße near the penguins . Specially set up tables and a wide range of catering options leave nothing to be desired.

You can meet presenter Andy Balzer from Radio Chemnitz at all event areas in the city. He broadcasts live from the city centre and provides information on the current standings. Fun is guaranteed.

The summer holidays start with a bang. At the Summerbreak on Friday and all day Saturday, you can enjoy skateboarding and inline skating on our portable skate ramp in the Stadthallenpark. So if you can't get through to Konkordiapark, you still have a perfect alternative here.

Party and concert at the park summer and open-air musical on the theatre square

The programme is complemented by numerous events in the city. For example, as part of the "Park Summer", the "Summerbreak" festival for all schoolchildren will take place in the Stadthallenpark on Friday 23 June after the school-leaving ceremony, where Max Giesinger will also be giving a live concert. On 24 and 25 June, concerts will take place in the Stadthallenpark from 8 pm.

In addition, the open-air event of the Chemnitz Municipal Theatres with the most popular musical of all time - "My Fair Lady" - will take place on the theatre square. The performances start at 7.30 pm on Friday and Saturday and at 5 pm on Sunday.

Background DM Road Cycling: All races - Up close ...

Bringing cycling back to the fans in the city centre - that was the declared aim of the joint bid by the city of Chemnitz and the two cycling clubs. Roland Kaiser from the Chemnitz Police Sports Club and Sports Director of the German Championships: "The races should take place on a route close to the city centre. I think we succeeded quite well with the challenging circuit."

The women's (Saturday) and men's (Sunday) road races will take place on this 19.4 kilometre circuit. From the start, the route takes the Reichsstraße, out of town via Bernsdorfer, Wartburgstraße and Reichenhainer Straße. Via Reichenhain, the route climbs up Gornauer Berg to the B 174. Kaiser: "This is the most challenging part of the route. There will be three uphill classifications in the men's road race, which will certainly add to the excitement." The route leads via Adelsberg to Augustusburger Straße. Via Brückenstraße/Theaterstraße back into the city centre to the finish on Hartmannstraße. There is a difference in altitude of 238 metres to overcome per lap, which is a decent number of metres over the entire race. The men will ride a total of 213.4 kilometres over eleven laps on Sunday, while the women will ride six laps on Saturday, covering just under 120 kilometres.

For the individual time trials on Friday, the regulations stipulate a flat, even course. The organisers found it in the Chemnitz Valley. For the men, who have to cover 48 kilometres, the turnaround will be in Altmittweida, while the women and the U23 will cover 31.2 kilometres and turn around near the Markersdorf museum railway station.
