Usage times for municipal indoor pools

Closure of the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool at the end of July

Due to the imminent closure of the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool at the end of July, it is necessary to allocate the usage times of the affected users to other Chemnitz indoor pools.

The procedure for this was discussed with those affected, including the city sports association. First and foremost, consideration was given to users who, due to various criteria, have a special entitlement to use the facilities in accordance with the favourable sports facility statutes, which regulate the allocation of sports facilities. These include swimming clubs, clubs that train children and young people or take part in competitions, as well as paying users such as the Technical University and the police. In addition, the hall times of different users are combined where possible in order to optimise usage times.

In return, however, it is unavoidable to temporarily restrict services such as public swimming or swimming courses and school programmes that go beyond the statutory educational mandate. After the summer break, public swimming in the "Am Südring" indoor swimming pool will therefore only be possible

  • Mondays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

take place. In addition, the municipal swimming pool will be available for public swimming as normal - even in summer.

These restrictions will be lifted when the Gablenz indoor swimming pool is available again once the ongoing renovation work has been completed. This is expected to be the case at the end of the year. The occupancy times for all indoor swimming pools will then also be redistributed and the usage times will once again be reduced in favour of public swimming.

Background Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool

At the end of November 2016, the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool was inspected again by a structural engineer and a structural engineer. Afterwards, the stability of the swimming pool and the pool surrounds was no longer guaranteed and the structural design of the affected components could fail. As a result of a further in-depth structural inspection on 10 April 2017 with the structural engineer and structural engineer, no agreement could be reached on operating the swimming pool beyond the end of July 2017. This is due to the fact that even the extensive safety measures introduced in the form of bracing and the recurring 14-day inspection measurements for deviations in the position of the critical components and the structural engineer's visual inspections could not minimise or sufficiently limit a further reduction in the minimum safety of the structural system and the reduction in the ductile component behaviour. As a result of the inspection report from 19 April, the closure of the indoor swimming pool at the end of July 2017 is now certain. The swimming pool will be used for the last time on 28 July 2017.
