Urban development framework planning Zwickauer Straße
First results of the public participation are available
In July, citizens were invited to contribute ideas and suggestions for the further development of the approximately eight-kilometre-long Zwickauer Straße urban space - between Kappler Drehe in the east, the motorway in the west, Kappelbach in the north and the railway line in the south.
The city of Chemnitz launched a dialogue process for the joint development of an urban development framework plan for Zwickauer Strasse with a public event, which was continued online via the city of Chemnitz's participation portal.
During the survey period from 10 July to 21 August, 332 participants took part in the online survey. 19 people marked their favourite places or places with a particular need for action online.
Unrenovated buildings, vacancies, derelict sites and neglected areas that create an unattractive cityscape and a "bad address" were cited as deficiencies or shortcomings. The external appearance of buildings, a negative perception by car dealers and car-related uses as well as a lack of a "district centre" and meeting places were also criticised.
With regard to road traffic, the high level of noise pollution from Zwickauer Straße and the lack of crossing options for pedestrians and cyclists were criticised. The road was also said to be unattractive for cyclists. In addition, the participants felt that there was a lack of greenery in the street and therefore a lack of amenity value. There are undesigned green spaces as well as derelict and underutilised areas.
The participants saw potential in the magnificent industrial buildings worthy of preservation. The development of the former Braustolz site was mentioned positively. The tram museum also has the potential to become an attraction and anchor point. The character and special features of the area should also be preserved.
It was suggested that the tram should be extended to Siegmar and that traffic should be calmed where possible. Furthermore, natural spaces could be created along the Kappelbach, and the Zinnpark and the area reserved for the Südverbund could be redesigned and utilised as open spaces.
As the next step in the dialogue process, which is a prerequisite for the application for urban development funding, the participation will be evaluated and documented in detail by the end of September. The detailed results will then also be published at www.chemnitz.de.
The results of the participation will be incorporated into the further development of the framework plan. Initial draft approaches will be presented in October 2020. The aim is to submit an application for inclusion in an urban development programme in the fourth quarter.
