Urban Development Day on Saturday, 5 May
This coming Saturday, 5 May, the fourth Urban Development Day will take place. Information about urban development strategies and measures will be provided during guided tours of the neighbourhood, building site visits, exhibitions and neighbourhood festivals. Chemnitz is once again taking part with a programme that aims to highlight the positive changes that have been achieved with urban development funding.
At Brühl, the Day of Urban Development will begin at 8 a.m. with a flea market and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Brühl Festival "Celebrate the new Brühl" will take place with a wide range of participants and activities. The new KRACHPrize winners, who are moving into shops at Brühl 42, will introduce themselves. The Brühl programme is full of ideas: you can carve vegetables and beginners are taught how to weave. The "Kleine Könige" shop, which offers creative clothing for the youngest, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. You can toast to this with cocktails, but you can also get creative yourself, for example by designing wood. All of this will be framed by games, street food and music, e.g. from Frida Lou, Solche und Wohnzimmer. At 4.30 p.m., a city guide will accompany those interested on a tour of the Brühl. During this tour, the historical and current development of the Brühl will be explored.
The renovation of the Gablenz indoor swimming pool, which is now open again, was a special funding project with almost 500,000 euros in subsidies from the urban development programme. During a 30-minute guided tour on 5 May at 10 a.m., interested parties can inspect the pool's technical cellar, including the water treatment and ventilation systems, as well as the new changing rooms and swimming areas. Interested parties should meet at the main entrance to the swimming pool.
Urban development funding from the federal and state governments and the City of Chemnitz helps to cope with economic changes, demographic upheavals and the negative consequences of climate change and to strengthen social cohesion in society. On the basis of integrated concepts, this funding provides important impetus in urban neighbourhoods. Urban development funding is a proven instrument for the development of urban neighbourhoods - including Sonnenberg and Brühl - but also for leisure and educational facilities. These funds relieve the burden on the municipal budget for many investments and enable the realisation of a wide range of public and private projects. These include the refurbishment of day-care centres, schools and cultural facilities, the securing of old buildings as well as road renewal and greening. The Alberti Park on Sonnenberg and energy-efficient systems for supplying heat and clean water were also subsidised.
In many neighbourhoods, urban development funding enables the financing of "local caretakers". For example, Rene Bzdok recently started work as a neighbourhood manager in Sonnenberg. Every euro from urban development programmes generates public and private follow-up investments amounting to seven euros. To this end, the city has updated the concept for promoting urban redevelopment for the coming years and is currently submitting new funding applications to the Sächsische Aufbaubank.
