Urban Development Day on 9 May
Projects, successes and perspectives of urban development funding are presented
On Sunday, 9 May, the Day of Urban Development will once again take place nationwide. The motto is "Vibrant places, strong communities". The City of Chemnitz's Urban Planning and Property Office is using this day to present projects, successes and prospects of urban development funding to citizens:
Grünzug Pleißenbach
A guided tour of the Pleißenbach green corridor starts at 10 am at the Limbacher Straße viaduct. The newly created park on the site of the former Altendorf goods station is an intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, combining near-natural water development with new spaces for recreation and exercise. Its implementation is supported by urban development funding and other funding programmes.
During the guided tour, the City Planning and Property Office, together with the planning office C23, will provide information about the development of the site from an industrial wasteland to a versatile green space and give an outlook on further planning.
Straße der Nationen 43
The listed building at Straße der Nationen 43 is one of the few surviving early Gründerzeit residential buildings in Chemnitz. Built around 1864, it is an important testimony to the city's history.
In order to preserve the monument, extensive safety measures have already been carried out. The building is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment - supported by urban development funding.
The owners open the building to interested visitors from 12 noon to 4 pm. Guided tours will provide insights into the history, current condition and further plans.
Stadtwirtschaft, Jakobstraße 46
The Stadtwirtschaft on the Sonnenberg, from Jakobstraße 46 to Schüffnerstraße 1, will be open from 2 pm to 4 pm. As a maker hub (place for creative makers), it will provide insights into its development and current use.
Guided tours of the Stadtwirtschaft will take place at 2 and 3 p.m., meeting point is the foyer of the Stadtwirtschaft at the entrance to Jakobstraße 46. The City Planning and Property Office will also provide information on current projects such as the Sonnenberger Promenade and the expansion of the district heating network.
Visitors can expect a varied programme: open workshops, studios and hands-on activities invite you to discover - including the Fab Lab of the Stadtfabrikanten, the Zeux materials initiative, the new BrauBox brewery, the MINT initiative of the Industrieverein and the Pfauch chocolate factory. Personal discussions with local stakeholders are also possible.
The construction of the Stadtwirtschaft was realised with urban development funding from the federal government, the Free State of Saxony, the City of Chemnitz and European funding.
Day of Urban Development Promotion
The day of action is a joint initiative of the federal government, the federal states, the Association of German Cities and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities. It showcases the achievements of urban development funding throughout Germany, strengthens the participation of citizens and recognises the commitment of the numerous local stakeholders.
Urban development funding has been shaping urban development in Chemnitz for more than 35 years. To date, more than €410 million in funding has been invested in the renovation of Wilhelminian-style neighbourhoods, the city centre, districts such as the Heckert area and the revitalisation of brownfield sites.
Together with local partners, buildings are being renovated, open spaces designed and new uses developed. Neighbourhood management, redevelopment agencies and other initiatives support these processes, advise owners and investors and strengthen coexistence in the neighbourhoods.
In the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, numerous intervention areas were developed with urban development funding under the motto "C the Unseen" - including the Garage Campus, the Stadtwirtschaft, Schillerplatz and the Pleißenbach green corridor. They are examples of creative re-use, new meeting spaces and sustainable urban development.
