Urban Development Day on 4 May
Pleißenbach green corridor, city economy, Protestant school centre and garage campus present themselves
This year's nationwide Urban Development Day will take place on Saturday, 4 May. Once again, a programme will be presented to interested parties in the Chemnitz city area that demonstrates the positive changes brought about by urban development funding. Under the motto "We in the neighbourhood", projects in the districts of Sonnenberg, Altendorf and Kappel will be presented that have been and are being realised with funding from the federal government, the Free State of Saxony and the City of Chemnitz: the Chemnitz Protestant School Centre, the Stadtwirtschaft, the Pleißenbach green corridor and the Garage Campus.
The Protestant School Centre, Tschaikowskistraße 49, invites you to an open day from 9 am to 1 pm. The school centre was renovated with urban development funding. Parts of the exhibition "Die Mischung macht's" on the urban regeneration of the Sonnenberg district can also be seen there.
A tour of the Stadtwirtschaft site, Jakobstraße 46, will take place at 2 pm. Over the next few years, a place for creative makers will be created on the site of the former fertiliser removal company, which was built in the working-class district of Sonnenberg in Chemnitz from 1891. The intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 offers space for new, creative ideas for the neighbourhood and the entire city.
Representatives of the City of Chemnitz's urban planning office will provide information on the status of the redevelopment work in the Stadtwirtschaft and on existing and future offerings: The FabLab of the Stadtfabrikanten e. V. is currently moving in, the future neighbourhood canteen is under construction and a concept of the citizens for green courtyards with small stages will soon be implemented. The meeting point for the tour is in front of the building at Jakobstraße 46.
A guided tour of the Pleißenbach green corridor begins at 10 am. Employees of the City of Chemnitz will provide information on the construction project and will be available to answer questions afterwards. The meeting point for the tour is at the temporary bridge (at Erzberger Straße 1a). The Pleißenbach green corridor is designed as a link between the two landscape elements Pleißenbach and the former railway site in Altendorf. It is being created as a connecting, central part of the Pleißenpark.
A scavenger hunt will start at 3 pm on the grounds of the Garage Campus, Zwickauer Straße 146. A quiz leads through the tram depot and across the forecourt and provides interesting facts about the past, present and future of the Garage Campus. The Garage Campus team will be offering tours of the campus area at 3 pm, 6 pm and 9 pm. In between, there will be music and a family programme. The site of the former depot and the Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) tram depot offers a lot of undiscovered potential and is being developed into a central cultural location.
Note: The Chemnitz Museum Night begins at 6 pm. Anyone interested in taking part in the free guided tours of the Garage Campus and visiting the Tram Museum from this time onwards must purchase a Museum Night ticket for the Tram Museum.
Background:
For more than 30 years, urban development funding from the federal and state governments - combined with many investments by the city and private commitment - has made an indispensable contribution to urban development. To date, more than 400 million euros in grants from various programmes have flowed into development areas of the Gründerzeit, the city centre, districts in the Heckert area and the revitalisation of brownfield sites. Neighbourhood managers are active on site with citizens on behalf of the urban planning office, redevelopment agencies and agencies advise building owners or new investors, encourage cooperative housing projects and support small businesses in the neighbourhood. As a rule, the federal government, the state and the city of Chemnitz each bear around one third of the costs of such projects. Urban development funding provides impetus for further public and private initiatives in the neighbourhood. 1 euro of urban development funding generates around 7 euros of follow-up investment.The Day of Urban Development has been celebrated nationwide since 2015 in order to strengthen citizen participation in urban development and to make the successes of urban development funding directly visible on site. In line with the motto of the Capital of Culture "C the Unseen!", urban development funding makes investments in intervention areas visible and tangible - creating places for makers, creative ideas, culture and leisure.
