Urban Development Day on 11 May

Campaigns and offers in various development areas

Under the motto "We in the neighbourhood", the nationwide Urban Development Day will also take place in Chemnitz on Saturday, 11 May. The successful joint project between the federal, state and local authorities will thus be made more transparent to the public. On this day, the diverse opportunities for citizen participation in the context of urban development funding will be communicated and the many ways in which citizens can help shape their own living environment will be demonstrated.

For almost 30 years, urban development funding from the federal and state governments, combined with many investments by the city and private commitment, has made an indispensable contribution to urban development. To date, around 264 million euros in grants from various programmes have been invested in redevelopment areas of the Gründerzeit, the city centre, the Heckert area and the revitalisation of brownfield sites.

Neighbourhood management teams work with local residents on behalf of the urban planning office. Redevelopment organisations and agencies advise building owners or new investors, encourage cooperative housing projects and support small businesses. Associations are involved in social projects. Energy neighbourhood concepts such as those in Brühl, Sonnenberg or the Regenbogenviertel in Kappel help to improve the urban climate directly on site.

The following events in various subsidised areas of the city will showcase good examples of neighbourhood upgrading that have already been achieved or will soon be achieved with urban development funding, celebrate public festivals with the stakeholders in the neighbourhood and present plans:

Altendorf railway station area - 12 noon Presentation of current plans

New green spaces on the old railway site on the Pleißenbach in Altendorf are good for our urban climate and also form the green framework for new residential areas between Kaßberg and Flemminggebiet. A new cycle path will soon be built on disused railway lines, a playground, promenades and footpaths into the neighbourhoods as well as floodplain areas along the Pleißenbach. The "Altendorf railway station area" framework plan was developed with extensive public participation in 2016 and will soon become a reality. The city has already been granted funding for the green corridor from the "Future Urban Green" programme.

The landscape planners from C23 and the City of Chemnitz will present the current plans in the centre of the future "Pleißenbach green corridor". The meeting point is at 12 noon on Ladestraße in front of the former goods shed at Altendorf railway station (access via Gutsweg).

Sonnenberg - from 10 am Albertifest,
12 and 2 pm neighbourhood walks, 1 and 3 pm guided tour of the Peterstraße construction site

The day on the Sonnenberg starts at 10 am in the Albertipark. Associations on the Sonnenberg and the neighbourhood management invite you to the "Albertifest". Young and old alike have the opportunity to enjoy the colourful supporting programme with pony rides, a bouncy castle, boules and much more. Food and music will also be provided. At 12 noon and 2 p.m., anyone interested can take part in neighbourhood walks with the city's redevelopment agency. Afterwards, there will be a view of a very special building site - Peterstraße 28. The corner building on the axis to Lessingplatz stood empty for over 20 years, was secured and is now being renovated. Flats for families and young people, the largest indoor aquaponics facility in Germany and a shop selling the vegetables grown there are being built. Aquaponics combines the rearing of fish in aquaculture and the cultivation of crops (vegetables/herbs) in hydroponics. Tests have been running successfully for some time in a small model plant. During the tour, you can see how a four-storey glass extension is being integrated into the courtyard façade for the large-scale facility. The city of Chemnitz is supporting this innovative project with around 300,000 euros in urban redevelopment funds. The guided tours of the construction site at Peterstraße 28 take place at 1 and 3 pm.

Brühlboulevard - Brühlfest from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Since 2012, the Brühl Boulevard has been developed very successfully with the "SOP - Active Urban and District Centres" programme. Soon all the buildings will have been renovated. The first Brühl pioneers and creatives have attracted new players. New projects also receive start-up support from the city's KRACH programme or through a fund from EU funds for small businesses. The number of commercial units has doubled. Seven years ago, 70 per cent of the flats on Brühl were empty - today it takes luck to find a vacant flat. In the past two months, five new shops have opened, with another one opening soon. Dreamers Café (Brühl 73), The Ginger Club - Concept Store (Brühl 32), Mimino - Georgian Bakery (Brühl 45), StyleYourLife - Accessories & Nail Design (Brühl 32), Fiffis Dog Salon (Elisenstraße 17) and soon: Fleischladen (Hermannstraße 8).

On this day, the Stakeholders & Friends of Brühl want to bring this wonderful revitalisation of Brühl closer to the curious and interested. They invite you to the Brühlfest from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and show what has been created in the neighbourhood with the support of urban development funding and a great deal of personal initiative.
