Urban Development Day at the Environmental Centre
Interesting and colourful programme on 13 May from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Next Saturday, 13 May, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Environmental Centre, Henriettenstraße 5, will host a colourful programme of events for the various users of the Environmental Centre with coffee, cake and music.
At 10 am and 12 noon there will be guided tours of the centre and at 11 am there will be a lecture on the history of the environmental centre as part of the exhibition "Church environmental groups in Karl-Marx-Stadt"
The Environmental Library will also be open from 10 am to 1 pm in the Environmental Centre. It is possible to register and borrow books free of charge. At the same time, educational programmes for children and young people will be presented. Appointments can also be made.
The environmental centre was extensively renovated last year. For example, the centre has been given a new entrance and barrier-free access, fire safety measures have been implemented, the sanitary facilities have been renovated and new windows have been installed. Solar energy will be used in the future.
The environmental centre is a Chemnitz turnaround facility. At the city's 4th round table on 14 February 1990, the participants decided to set up an environmental centre at Henriettenstraße 5. It was the first building of the former GDR Ministry of State Security to be opened to the public.
Chemnitz residents cleared out and renovated the building. Environmental associations moved into the building, Café Henrie, the first organic food shop in Chemnitz, a world shop, an environmental library and a carpooling centre were set up. Since then, various environmental, peace and Third World initiatives, such as the Agenda 21 working groups, have met under the umbrella of the Environmental Centre.
