Upgrading Wenzel-Verner-Platz
Construction work to upgrade Wenzel-Verner-Platz will begin next week (subject to suitable weather conditions). Initially, demolition, felling and clearing work is planned. Eight of a total of 23 existing trees will be uprooted due to their poor condition, and tree care work will be carried out on all existing trees that are worth preserving.
The main features of the recreational areas (bench locations) and the path connections will be retained for the redesign. The basic structure of the greenery will also be retained, but it will be renewed and supplemented. Two planting islands for permanent perennial/grass plantings or seasonal plantings based on the existing structure will be inserted into the paved square areas.
Light-coloured concrete slabs and concrete paving will be used for the basic new construction of the paved areas of approx. 320 square metres. These areas will be bordered with natural stone kerbs.
The existing vegetation areas will be cleared and replanted with the exception of the hedge planting on the north-east side. In detail, 800 square metres of lawn will be newly laid, 320 square metres of cover and flowering shrubs (including approx. 210 flowering shrubs and an ornamental apple tree as well as approx. 1400 flower bulbs, which will be planted) and 80 square metres of perennials and grasses will be planted.
The square will also be newly equipped with four benches with backrests, concrete seating elements (21 metres in total) with partially integrated seating surfaces made of wooden slats and four litter bins with covers. In addition, an existing work of art by Karl Clauss Dietel is to be installed on the square.
The existing benches will be dismantled for reuse.
The construction and planting work will be completed by May 2018. Further maintenance measures for the vegetation areas are planned until the end of November 2018.
The costs total 120,000 euros. Two-thirds of the measure is being funded by the EU (Urban Redevelopment East - part of the upgrading programme), while the city will finance one-third with its own funds.
The plans were drawn up by the architectural firm Keller, Limbach-Oberfrohna. Fachcenter Garten + STL-Bau GmbH, Hauptmannsgrün, was commissioned with the realisation.
