Update of the urban redevelopment concept adopted

At its meeting today, the city council decided to update the city of Chemnitz's urban redevelopment concept. The concept now also includes the "Stadtumbau Ost Chemnitz", "Altchemnitz" and "Zwickauer Straße" development areas.

After the inclusion of the three Magistralen in the urban redevelopment concept was initially rejected by the Free State of Saxony in 2018, the development area concept was adapted and updated. This created the basis for a new application with the new "Zwickauer Straße" and "Altchemnitz" areas of action.

Implementation is subject to the provision of federal, state and EU funding and the availability of budget funds from the City of Chemnitz.

Background:

The "Urban Redevelopment East Chemnitz" development area was defined by City Council resolution B-047/2012 on 29 February 2012 and included by the Free State of Saxony for funding in the (then) federal and state funding programme for urban redevelopment. The urban redevelopment concept for Chemnitz with the "Urban Redevelopment East Chemnitz" funding area, its action objectives and action plans were last updated in 2018 by resolution B-089/2018 and have been the basis for funding ever since. For 30 years now, the upgrading of urban neighbourhoods through urban development funding has significantly improved the attractiveness of the city of Chemnitz, making it more liveable for Chemnitz residents and attractive for newcomers.
