Update of the partial school network plan for grammar schools
At its meeting today, the City Council decided to update the partial school network plan for grammar schools in Chemnitz. This includes a school network report, a medium and long-term demand forecast, long-term target planning with measures, a location plan and proof of coordination with youth welfare planning.
The aim is to offer a range of school facilities with a high level of education, making full use of all capacities. The partial school network plan for grammar schools presents the status of the 2019/2020 school year and the long-term development up to the 2029/2030 school year.
The forecast shows that the available capacities will probably no longer be sufficient to meet the demand for grammar schools from the 2021/2022 school year onwards. This is due to rising pupil numbers. However, a new grammar school is not necessary. Extensions are currently planned for Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium and Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium. The two educational institutions will then be able to regularly accommodate four Year 5 classes from the 2024/2025 school year.
Another option is the acquisition of the Wielandstraße school property, which is currently still owned by Heim gGmbH and is used by the Vocational School Centre for Business II. Depending on the vocational school network planning, a branch of the Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium would also be possible here.
In addition, fuu sachsen gGmbH intends to build a new international grammar school in cooperation with Switzerland at the Seumestraße site from the 2022/2023 school year.
Chemnitz has seven grammar schools: the Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium, the Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium, the Gymnasium Einsiedel, the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium, the Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Gymnasium, the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff Gymnasium and the Sportgymnasium.
There are also four independent schools that offer a grammar school programme: DPFA-Regenbogen-Gymnasium Chemnitz, Evangelisches Schulzentrum Chemnitz, Montessori-Schule Chemnitz - Freies integratives Gymnasium and Waldorfschule Chemnitz.
