Ukraine aid - Chemnitz can provide several hundred accommodation places
The city of Chemnitz can provide several hundred places in flats and communal facilities for refugees from Ukraine at short notice.
This was announced today by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Social Affairs Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky at a press conference. The city of Chemnitz is thus reacting to the situation in Ukraine.
"It is our natural duty to take in the refugees from Ukraine and help them," said Lord Mayor Sven Schulze. For this reason, Schulze continued, preparations had already begun on Friday and the city of Chemnitz was in a position to help the refugees at short notice.
Social Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky emphasised that the City of Chemnitz also wants to coordinate the many offers of help from the city's society:
For example, citizens who want to offer accommodation can register on the City of Chemnitz website and the social welfare office will then get back to the offers as required.(www.chemnitz.de/ukrainehilfe)
"These offers from citizens are a wonderful addition to our range of flats and facilities. I would like to thank everyone who has already agreed to take in refugees from Ukraine at the weekend," says Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky.
The Chemnitz Volunteer Centre is available for further volunteer offers. Please send offers by email to fwz(at)caritas-chemnitz.de. Chemnitz residents can find further information at www.aktiv-in-chemnitz.de
The City of Chemnitz is also asking for donations to be made to the disaster relief accounts, for example from Aktion Deutschland hilft (IBAN DE62 3702 0500 0000 1020 30).
On the occasion of the upcoming Peace Day in the city next Saturday, 5 March, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze is calling on the people of Chemnitz to set an example for peace and take part in the central event from 6 p.m. on the market square by the town hall.
