Two works of art in public spaces restored
"Rock scenery" in the Heckert area and sculpture of the Klapperbrunnen completed
In the year 2022, which is drawing to a close, two restoration measures in the field of public art have been completed in the city of Chemnitz.
At the end of October, Rainer Maria Schubert completed the restoration of his work "Felsszenerie" at the site on Alfred-Neubert-Straße in the Heckert area. Since summer 2021, the artist had been repairing the cracks and flaking on the sculpture on site that had developed over the years. A task that took a lot of time. The "Rock Scene", which Rainer Maria Schubert himself describes as his most important work, was created in 1988.
Now the "Felsszenerie" shines again in new splendour, as most of the 1,400 or so ceramic steles have been given a coat of paint. This was necessary after the repairs to homogenise the overall appearance. The colour also protects the artwork.
Another restoration measure, which was also started in summer 2021 and has now been completed, concerns the repair of the sculpture of the popular Klapperbrunnen fountain. Created by artist Johannes Belz in 1968, the Klapperbrunnen fountain has been a striking feature of the Chemnitz cityscape ever since. The fountain sculpture was restored and repaired by Erik Neukirchner, grandson of Johannes Belz and an artist himself, for whom this was a matter close to his heart.
The completion of the fountain sculpture is the first step in the overall restoration of the Klapperbrunnen. The restoration of the water basin and water technology will begin in spring 2023. The fountain sculpture will remain in Erik Neukirchner's studio until the system is functional again.
