Two trees, a horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and a Dutch lime (Tilia x vulgaris), are currently being felled in the vivarium area of the Chemnitz Botanical Gardens. Both trees have to be felled for safety reasons.
Around 70 per cent of the Dutch lime tree is already dead and heavily infested with blight fungus. There are cavities and rotting at the base of the trunk. Branches repeatedly broke off in the summer of 2025. There is an acute risk of breakage.
The horse chestnut tree shows serious damage in the upper trunk area, an open cavity extending over several metres. In addition, a crown protection system was installed for a strong branch in the past. This branch sank last year. An acute danger cannot be ruled out either.
