Two more information pillars for Chemnitz city centre
Following the stele at the Red Tower, two more stelae have been added today to provide information about Chemnitz's city gates.
A stele for the Johannistor will be located in front of the former Dresdner Bank on Johannisplatz. It provides information about the Old St John's Church from the 13th century, the Johannistor tower from the 16th century and takes up the development of Johannisplatz up to the 20th century. It also contains texts and pictures of the former town hall building on Beckerplatz and the Dresdner Bank, the only building that has survived on Beckerplatz since the Second World War.
The Chemnitzer Tor stele is located in front of the "Moritzhof" administration building on Bahnhofstraße. It spans the period from the medieval city gate to the present day and also contains information about the old post office, which temporarily gave the transport axis the name Poststraße.
In the coming months, stelae will be added for the Nikolaitor gate on today's Falkeplatz, the gate with the former Paulikirche church and the monastery gate on today's Theaterstraße.
The project is being realised jointly by the Mayor's Office, the Chemnitz History Society, the Chemnitz City Archive, the Department of Monument Protection in the Building Permit Office, the Association of Tour Guides and the Chemnitz Business Promotion and Development Company (CWE) as well as other offices of the city administration. The steles were financed from city budget funds totalling approx. 2,400 euros each.
