Two family midwives support young mothers

Coordinator of the Chemnitz Early Help Network informs youth welfare committee

Grit Rosenberg, coordinator of the Chemnitz Early Help Network at the city's Office for Youth and Family, informed the members of the Youth Welfare Committee about the funding priorities of the Federal Early Help Initiative, the tasks to be realised in Chemnitz and the start of the family support activities of the family midwives at the committee's regular meeting yesterday.

Since 1 March 2014, two family midwives have been working in Chemnitz on behalf of the city's Office for Youth and Family. Their work is funded by the Federal Early Help Initiative. The role of a family midwife is to support young women and/or families from the time of pregnancy up to one year after the birth of the child. A family midwife has the opportunity to accompany the young mother or family for a maximum of five hours per week. The support provided by the family midwife is intended, for example, to enable an underage mother to nurture her child in an age-appropriate manner and to feed it appropriately for its age. The family midwife should also make the young mother herself aware of external support services (mother-child circle, toddler group, Pekip group), actively support, accompany or even instruct her.

The meeting also provided information on the network's upcoming dates: the focus here is the symposium on 2 July 2014 in the TIETZ event hall. As a kick-off event, the aim of the symposium is to pave the way for close cooperation between specialists from various fields with a connection to young (expectant) mothers, young couples and/or families in order to provide or arrange support services at an early stage in line with the situation and needs. Network coordinator Grit Rosenberg is therefore hoping for a great response from the invited experts in order to consolidate and develop the Chemnitz Early Help Network and to gain further network partners for committed participation.

Note for the media: If your editorial team is interested in attending the symposium and reporting on it, please contact network coordinator Grit Rosenberg in advance on 0371/488-5134.
