Two-court sports hall at the Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium
Ceremonial inauguration on 7 March, 2 pm
On Monday, 7 March 2016 at 2 p.m., the Zweifeldsporthalle at Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium will be officially opened in the presence of Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig, who will symbolically hand over the key to headmaster Andreas Gersdorf. The colourful festive programme will be organised by pupils of the grammar school.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
After a construction period of almost two years, the hall was put into operation by the pupils on 22 February 2016 after the winter holidays.
The construction project at Dr. Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium included both the construction of the new 22 x 44 metre sports hall with outdoor facilities and the renovation of the gymnasium in the school building, which is scheduled for completion in mid-March 2016.
The level of the hall on the corner of Henriettenstrasse and Barbarossastrasse was lowered three metres below that of the existing site in order to integrate the new building into the historic surroundings of the district. The building and facilities were designed to be barrier-free and disabled-friendly.
The outdoor facilities include break areas and outdoor sports facilities. In addition, parking spaces for bicycles as well as recreation and exercise areas were created.
The outdoor sports facilities include a 15 x 28 metre all-weather pitch, a 60 metre short-distance running track, a shot put facility with two lanes, a long jump facility with two lanes as well as goals, basketball stands and volleyball posts.
The total costs have been estimated at around 4.26 million euros, of which 2.87 million euros will be provided by the city of Chemnitz and the remainder by subsidies. An increase of around 2% of the estimated costs is currently expected due to construction time extensions and material adjustments, among other things. (A specific amount can only be stated once the overall project has been finalised). The original plan was to start using the building after the 2015 summer holidays. However, delays in the tendering process led to the extension of the hall being postponed.
Sports lessons completely covered by new hall
For the Dr Wilhelm André Gymnasium, the calculated requirement for compulsory PE lessons in the 2015/16 school year is 88 lessons per week. As part of the planning for the 2015/16 school year, the headteacher reported a total requirement of 90 school hours and used this as the basis for further considerations. The sports hall itself is designed with a total capacity for school sports of 135 school hours. This means that by utilising all available sports facilities (sports hall and gymnastics room in the school building) at the Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium site, the sports lessons required for compulsory lessons can be fully covered. Any remaining capacity is made available for leisure activities.
