Tree planting: 112 imperial lime trees, Norway maples and hazel trees will be planted from the end of November until spring 2015
Parks department continues replacement planting on six road sections
The planting season for street trees is now also beginning: 112 trees will be planted on six road sections by spring 2015, after 166 trees have already been planted on twelve roads in the city area by the Parks Department in the season from autumn 2013 to the beginning of May 2014.
The city is now investing a total of around 162,000 euros in tree planting.
The company Fachcenter Garten+STL-Bau GmbH from Hauptmannsgrün was commissioned with the planting work.
As soon as the tree nursery begins delivery, the planting work can begin around the end of November. The work will start with replacement planting on Walter-Oertel-Straße: 32 Kaiser lime trees will be planted in the sections between Horst-Menzel-Straße and Franz-Mehring-Straße, between Barbarossastraße and Andréstraße and Kanzlerstraße and Reichsstraße. The existing tree discs will be extended and additional new tree discs created. Ten new trees - hazel and Norway maple - will be planted in Agricolastrasse to supplement the existing street trees. In addition, 14 new Norway maples will be replanted on Münchner Straße and the existing tree discs will be partially extended. New tree locations were also created on Ahornstraße during the road and footpath extension. Together with replacement planting at the old locations, 25 Norway maples are to be planted here by next spring. Replacement planting will also be carried out on Albrechtstrasse with 18 young trees (also Norway maples) and on Nürnberger Strasse with 13 lime trees.
The planting of street trees is essential for a variety of reasons: the trees reduce dust and noise, improve air quality, provide shade in summer and, in the sum of their qualities, also have a direct influence on people's well-being. One of the tasks of the City of Chemnitz is to maintain this stock and keep it safe for traffic and, where it is sensible and necessary, to expand it and close any gaps that have arisen as a result of necessary felling.
In the course of the new planting, 29 old trees have to be felled on five of the streets at the same time, which pose a danger to passers-by and road users due to their very poor condition (rot and cracks in the trunk or crown, 70 to 80 per cent of the crown already dead). Four trees have to be felled on Walter-Oertel-Straße, six on Agricolastraße, eight on Münchner Straße, two on Ahornstraße and nine on Albrechtstraße.
