Tree felling work in the south-east urban area
Tree felling work is expected to begin this week in the south-east urban area. During the ongoing tree inspections, damage to trees has been identified that leads to their loss of stability or stability. This means that the trees in question are in danger of breaking off or falling over. There is an urgent need for action on the trees listed in the appendix.
Without exception, all the work to be carried out is urgent and serves to maintain or restore road safety.
All tree maintenance measures within the meaning of the duty to maintain road safety are legally permissible and do not constitute an offence under Section 39 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG).
The wood from the felled trees becomes the property of the company commissioned with the tree felling.
Explanation
On the Südring between Annaberger Straße and Augustusburger Straße, work is being carried out at a total of 69 locations. 17 of these are pure stump grinding measures, i.e. the stumps and roots of trees that have already been felled are removed.
52 trees will be felled, 17 of them on the central reservation.
In detail, these are
- 33 trees from the 2011 planting year
- 6 trees from planting year 2002
- 13 trees from the 2006 planting year
Due to the age of the trees, the Südring is regularly inspected at two-year intervals. 32 of the 52 trees had already stopped budding at the beginning of the year and were therefore already dead, which is thought to be due to the drought of recent years. The other 20 trees exhibited severe abnormalities in their foliage over the course of the year, which can also be attributed to the prolonged drought. The vitality of these trees was severely reduced or they either died partially or completely.
In addition to all environmental factors, the use of de-icing salts also plays a significant role. The trees in the centre strip are exposed to twice as much as trees on the roadsides. In the existing tree population, leaf edge discolouration and stunted shoot tips on maples and ash trees can be seen almost universally over the course of the growing season.
The tree felling on the Südring, which is relevant to traffic safety, cannot be postponed.
The replacement planting can only be planned after the felling has been completed. The central reservation of the south ring road will not be replanted as these trees have no chance of developing healthily.
Replacement planting on Zschopauer Straße between Südring and the city boundary is initially planned for spring 2023, where there are similarly heavy losses.
A separate press release will be issued for this.
