Eight street trees were felled in Lohrstraße this morning. Lohrstraße in the Schloßchemnitz district between Blankenauer Straße and Further Straße is currently being completely renovated as part of a coordinated construction project.
The original plan was to preserve the eight maple trees in this section. During the construction work, however, it was discovered that the trees are rooted in a concrete slab, i.e. in the carriageway structure, and therefore do not have sufficient long-term development prospects. In addition, the trees would have stood too close to the newly designed kerb in the future. As a result, it could not have been ruled out that the statically relevant roots would have suffered further massive damage. In addition, the current condition of the tree discs did not allow the eight trees to grow sufficiently in the long term, as they were completely sealed on the surface. The water and nutrient supply to the trees was therefore considerably restricted.
After comprehensive consideration of the advantages and disadvantages, the specialist departments of the City of Chemnitz involved jointly decided to fell the eight trees in Lohrstraße and replace them with new plantings of eight trees during the ongoing road construction work. At the same time, the tree discs will also be redesigned to enable significantly better growing conditions in the long term and to increase the stability and road safety of the trees.
The new plantings in optimised locations also make it possible to maintain the existing parking arrangement with the option of cross-parking. Otherwise, longitudinal or diagonal parking would have had to be arranged after completion of the construction work for reasons of space, which would have resulted in the loss of up to 20 parking spaces.
The necessary licences for the felling have been obtained. A species protection inspection of the eight maple trees by an external expert on 26 August revealed that there are currently no breeding or nesting sites for birds or other specially protected species in the affected trees or their immediate surroundings. There are also no indications of the presence of habitats of protected species such as bats, insects or other specially protected animal species.
The new plantings will be carried out together with the plantings in the neighbouring section between Blankenauer Straße and Wilhelm-Külz-Platz during the planting period this autumn.
