Tree felling in the street
Until the end of February, trees will be felled in streets throughout the city.
During the ongoing tree inspections, it was established that the trees listed in the appendix require immediate action.
A total of 143 trees are affected, i.e. 55 trees will have to be felled in the north of Chemnitz, 53 in the south-east and 35 in the south-west. This may result in obstructions in the traffic area.
Without exception, all upcoming work is urgent measures that serve to maintain or establish road safety.
All tree maintenance measures in the sense of the duty to maintain road safety are legally permissible and do not constitute an offence under § 39 BNatSchG or § 25 SächsNatSchG.
The wood from the felled trees becomes the property of the company commissioned to fell the trees.
Explanations on tree felling:
All trees in the traffic area of the City of Chemnitz are subject to regular tree inspections, which may lead to measures being taken to restore road safety. In the process, attention is paid on site to any indications that may result in a restriction of the breaking strength (tree breaks apart above) and/or the stability (tree falls over). If there are serious reasons for this, felling is unavoidable.
Reasons for felling include
- The tree is dead, i.e. its stability is reduced. This is visible when the crown dies. The supporting roots then also die off.
- The tree shows cracks due to drought/frost, i.e. the breaking strength is reduced as the internal statics (natural pre-stressing) is affected.
- Fungal infestation on the tree (occurrence of relevant fungal fruiting bodies), i.e. the stability and breaking strength is reduced as the wood is broken down and thus loses strength due to the fungi.
The most common harmful fungi on trees in the urban area are Blight crust fungi, lacquer mushrooms, sparse scaly mushrooms and shaggy shiny mushrooms
- The tree is damaged by capricious weather and other incidents, e.g. a storm tears out parts of the crown, road salt irreversibly damages roots, snow breakage, irreversible collision damage from road accidents, etc.
