Tree care work and felling in the urban area

Measures in the city park, on Helbersdorfer Strasse and in the botanical garden

This week, various tree maintenance and felling works will begin in several places in the city area. Specifically, this concerns the area of the southern city park, the public green space between Helbersdorfer Straße and the street Am Stadtpark (Helbersdorf) and the botanical garden.

The measures on behalf of the City of Chemnitz in detail:

Green space between Helbersdorfer Straße and the street Am Stadtpark (Helbersdorf)

As part of the traffic safety obligation, various tree maintenance work will begin this week on the public green space between Helbersdorfer Straße and Am Stadtpark (Helbersdorf). In addition, 231 trees will be felled.
The work will be carried out in the green area uphill from the street Am Stadtpark to Helbersdorfer Straße. This means that there will be temporary restrictions, particularly in the car park area. Cars parked in this area have already been damaged by fallen trees in the past.

The area, especially the poplars above the slope, were planted as part of the construction of the Heckert area. These are fast-growing species with a relatively short life expectancy and a short removal period. The trees and shrubs were planted too densely and are already over-aged or their crowns have already died. Under the protection of these pioneer trees, oaks and beeches have naturally colonised and are growing there, which is encouraged by the felling. As a result, a closed and diverse wooded area will quickly develop again.
The necessary tree felling will be carried out by 28 February in accordance with nature conservation regulations; depending on the weather, the maintenance work that has also been commissioned could continue beyond this date.
The work will be carried out by the company Dieter Richter GmbH Landschafts- & Baumpflege. The total costs amount to approx. 50,000 euros.

Southern city park

Also as part of the road safety obligation, various tree maintenance works will be carried out in the area of the southern city park (south of Südring to Schwarzenberger Straße, adjacent to the Markersdorf residential area) from next week. This will also involve the felling of 40 trees. The tree felling is necessary as some of the forest-like trees along the paths have become significantly overaged in recent years. Some of the trees also pose a danger to the neighbouring gardens.
The measure was agreed with the monument authority. Target tree species were defined for further development, which are already present in the undergrowth and will be promoted through maintenance measures.
The work will be carried out by the company Chemnitzer Forst- und Landschaftsservice. The total costs amount to approx. 73,000 euros.

Botanical garden

A larch and a false cypress in front of the vivarium and in the area of the aviaries currently have to be felled in the Botanical Garden of the City of Chemnitz.
Both trees are characterised by severe fungal infestation. The base of the trunk is rotten and hollowed out. An acute danger due to the risk of breakage cannot be ruled out.
