Travelling through Europe by train free of charge
18-year-olds can apply for an EU Travel Pass
As part of DiscoverEU, the EU Commission is issuing free travel passes to Europeans aged 18 and over. This makes it possible to travel and explore all EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey by train for a whole month from July 2022 to July 2023.
This programme is designed to help young Europeans make their first independent trips outside their home country and encourage them to get to know other cultures on the continent. The EU has a total of 35,000 travel passes available. The application period started yesterday at noon and runs until 21 April, 12 noon.
All young people from EU countries born between 1 July 2003 and 30 June 2004 who are legally resident in an EU Member State or in a third country associated with Erasmus+ are eligible to apply. (This includes the 27 EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey).
Applicants also complete a multiple-choice quiz with general questions about the European Union and other EU youth initiatives. Travel passes will be awarded according to the ranking of correct answers, while stocks last.
Programme participants will receive a travel pass that will allow them to travel by train within Europe for a maximum of 30 days between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023.
They will also receive a DiscoverEU discount card. This offers discounts on public transport, culture, accommodation, food, sport and other services in all participating countries.
