On Saturday, 18 January, Chemnitz will open the year of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 with a big celebration in the city centre.
Today, Mayor Knut Kunze, Mayor Michael Stötzer and Jens Meiwald, CEO of Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG), provided information on the traffic concept and issues relating to safety and demonstrations during the opening weekend of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
Around the opening day, numerous streets in the city centre will be closed and parking and stopping bans will be in place. For example, Brückenstraße between Theaterstraße and Straße der Nationen will be completely closed from Wednesday, 15 January, 9 am to Wednesday, Thursday, 23 January, 6 pm. The first reconstruction work on Brückenstraße in the area of the bus stops will begin on Thursday, 9 January.
On Saturday, 18 January, further roads will be closed to traffic from 9 am to midnight. This affects the following roads and areas:
- Straße der Nationen between the central bus stop, Brückenstraße and Richard-Tauber-Straße
- Carolastraße
- Brückenstraße between Theaterstraße and Bahnhofstraße
- Brückenstraße to Jansenfabrik (Stumpf)
- Waisenstraße between Bahnhofstraße and Carolastraße
- Theunertstraße between Promenadenstraße and Schloßstraße (no stopping only)
- Johannisplatz (from the beginning of the pedestrian zone)
- Markt and Neumarkt
- Rosenhof adjacent to the market (pedestrian zone)
- Am Wall
- Innere Klosterstraße
- Webergasse
- Rathausstraße
- Bretgasse (from the beginning of the pedestrian zone)
- Theaterstraße between Hartmannstraße and Mühlenstraße at "Heck Art" level
Parking is not possible in these areas from 6 am and on Brückenstraße (Stumpf) from 9 am. Residents have been informed and are asked to move their vehicles out of the affected areas in good time and park elsewhere. Residents with a valid resident's parking permit for the respective management neighbourhood may also park in all other neighbourhoods in the management zones on this day.
The main diversion route for private traffic is via Bahnhofstraße - Dresdner Straße - Müllerstraße - Promenadenstraße - Hartmannstraße - Theaterstraße.
The multi-storey car parks such as Galerie Roter Turm, Galeria Kaufhof, Rathaus-Passagen/Am Wall and Rosenhof are accessible.
Coaches will be directed to Schillerplatz, Bahnhofstraße (after Brückenstraße in the direction of Falkeplatz) and the long-distance bus terminal for boarding and alighting.

Mayor Knut Kunze also provided information about the planned security measures. Over the past few months, the police, the City of Chemnitz, the organiser of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH and other parties involved, such as CVAG, ASR and the fire brigade, have been in regular consultation. Especially after the events in Magdeburg shortly before Christmas, the plans were reviewed again for possible adjustments.
Several demonstrations have also been registered and approved for the afternoon of 18 January and will take place outside the event areas. The police will secure the demonstrations.
