Traffic opening roundabout Stollberger Straße / Neukirchner Straße
Tomorrow afternoon, 31 August 2018, the new roundabout on Stollberger Straße with the Neukirchner Straße junction will be opened to traffic. The traffic lights on Stollberger Straße and the closure of Neukirchner Straße to private traffic will therefore no longer apply. The petrol station on Stollberger Straße is once again accessible without restrictions.
The previous junction of Stollberger Straße - Neukirchner Straße - Friedrich-Viertel-Straße had major deficits in terms of efficiency and road safety. These were eliminated with the conversion to a roundabout. In addition to reducing waiting times, especially for left-turners from the side streets, visibility and traffic conditions were generally improved. Pedestrians can now be guided safely and without barriers at all junction approaches thanks to the new pavements in the junction area and the construction of carriageway dividers as crossing aids.
The constructed roundabout has an outer diameter of 34 metres. The circular carriageway has a width of six metres. In the adjacent road branches, a total length of 250 metres of road was upgraded. Barrier-free bus stops were installed on the southern branch of Stollberger Straße in the direction of the city centre and on Neukirchner Straße in the direction of the roundabout.
Construction began in mid-September 2017. Construction was delayed by two months due to measures taken by a telecommunications service provider in the construction area.
Remaining work on Fr.-Viertel-Straße and the dismantling of temporary structures that are no longer required will continue until mid-September without any traffic restrictions.
Chemnitzer Verkehrsbau GmbH was commissioned to carry out the construction work. The construction costs of the project totalled around 850,000 euros. This project was subsidised by the Free State of Saxony with 665,000 euros as part of the funding for municipal road and bridge construction.
