Traffic opening of the roundabout at Südbahnhof (Reichenhainer Straße/Altchemnitzer Straße)
The new roundabout at the Südbahnhof (Reichenhainer Str./Altchemnitzer Str./Elsasser Straße) can be used at the start of the new school year.
In the last few days, the asphalt surface course has been laid in the entire construction area. The road markings, traffic-regulating signage and paving of the pavements are currently still being carried out. This means that the new junction can be opened to traffic next Saturday, 5 August 2017.
Fraunhoferstraße and Elsasser Straße have also been connected to the new roundabout. The new traffic connection from Reichenhainer Straße to Südring can be made directly via Fraunhoferstraße and F.-O.-Schimmel-Straße in future.
The roundabout has an outer radius of 32 metres. Reichenhainer Straße, Elsasser Straße, Altchemnitzer Straße and Fraunhoferstraße will be connected to the roundabout at right angles. The roundabout has a circular carriageway with a width of 5.25m. Pedestrian crossings are arranged in the approaching traffic arms. In Reichenhainer Straße, Altchemnitzer Straße and Fraunhoferstraße, additional lane dividers with a width of 2.50 metres were installed as crossing aids.
In the construction area, all media such as sewerage, electricity, gas, drinking water, lighting and communications were renewed or renovated. The construction work was coordinated and carried out jointly by the Chemnitz Civil Engineering Office, eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co KG and the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz. At the Reichenhainer Straße / Südbahnstraße junction, a rainwater overflow structure was built on behalf of the City of Chemnitz waste management company.
The remaining work on the pavements will be carried out over the next few weeks. In addition, trees will be planted around the edges in the autumn. The circular island will be landscaped for the time being and the future design is still being finalised in collaboration with Chemnitz University of Technology.
Construction work began on 11 July 2016 and the construction costs of the overall project amount to around 2.2 million euros, of which road construction measures amounting to around one million euros were funded by the Free State of Saxony with 80 percent as part of the funding for municipal road and bridge construction.
EUROVIA Verkehrsbau Union GmbH, Gewerbestr. 10 in 04420 Markranstädt/OT Frankenheim was commissioned with the construction work.
