Traditional May bonfire on Walpurgis Night in Chemnitz
As every year, the traditional May bonfires burn again on 30 April for Walpurgis Night.
The fires blaze at the following locations and dates in Chemnitz:
- Hartmann-Platz from 6 pm to 10 pm
- Goetheweg 58-60 / corner of Rabensteiner Straße from 7.30 pm to midnight
- Kreisigstraße opposite Eselsbrücke from 6 pm to midnight
- Schulberg 5 from 6 pm to midnight
- Viewpoint at the poplar tree from 8.30 pm to midnight
- Guerickestraße 48 sports ground (Windweg) from 8 pm to midnight
- Corner of Kirchweg from 9 pm to midnight
- Building yard of the KGV, Steinwiese 95 from 5 pm to midnight
- Steinwiese 93 from 7 pm to 9 pm
Authorisation for such customary bonfires is granted on the basis of the police regulations of the City of Chemnitz and must be submitted to the regulatory authority at least ten days before the date. The organisers of such a fire must provide suitable extinguishing equipment and observe safety distances.

Walpurgis Night was named after Saint Walpurga, whose memorial day was celebrated on the day of her canonisation on 1 May until the Middle Ages. As a dance into May on the eve of May Day, it has also found its way into today's everyday life as an urban, modern event.
