Traditional clothing of the miners and smelters

Adult education centre: Lecture on 4 November, 6 to 7.30 pm, TIETZ, Neue Sächsische Galerie

On Thursday, 4 November, from 6 to 7.30 p.m., the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites interested parties to the lecture "Zwischen Tracht, Habit und Uniform. The clothing of miners and smelters". It is not only at the mountain parades during Advent that the miners and smelters of the region parade in their ornate habits, they are also evidence of historical change.

Admission is free. Due to the limited number of places available, registration is recommended at www.vhs-chemnitz.de or 0371 488 4343.

The lecture opens a unique chapter in Saxon mining and metallurgy: It tells of the development of practical work clothing, which evolved from a distinctive traditional costume to a regimented "mountain parade habit" to a prescribed service and parade uniform. Their development in the field of tension between the splendour and misery of a profession is traced. Heino Neuber from the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum will be on hand to answer questions. He is a museologist and head of the mining museum's collection. He has been researching the history of mining and metallurgy in the region for many years.

This event is a co-operation between the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
