Tours of the Stadtwirtschaft site
Offer for the Day of Urban Development on Saturday, 14 May
On Saturday, 14 May, interested parties are invited to the creative courtyard "Die Stadtwirtschaft" on the Sonnenberg. The occasion is the nationwide Day of Urban Development. Cities and municipalities throughout Germany will be presenting interesting urban development projects that are only possible thanks to support from the federal and state governments as well as a great deal of commitment from cities and initiatives.
Two tours of the site are planned, starting at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., each lasting around an hour. The meeting point is at Jakobstraße 46 in front of the main entrance. Representatives of the "Sonnenberg History" working group and the "Creative Chemnitz" working group will join forces with the city planning office to look back at the past and its use as a site for Chemnitz waste management and forward to the future and its conversion into a cultural and creative centre.
As an intervention area for the Capital of Culture, "Stadtwirtschaft" is to be developed in several construction phases by 2025 into a place for creative makers and with many offers for the neighbourhood and the entire city. To this end, the city council adopted a development concept in 2021, which will be implemented in phases.
The second construction phase, "House A", is soon to be tackled with the support of urban development funding; this will be presented to the city council for a decision at its upcoming meeting on 18 May. The first creative people moved into the so-called "House D" at Jakobstraße 46 back in 2018, which was renovated thanks to EU funding. This section is operated by "Kreative Chemnitz".
In the coming months, the city of Chemnitz will be organising several workshops to develop the future design of the courtyards, entrances and city workshops as well as the future communal operation together with users, interested parties and the district population with funding as a "National Urban Development Project".
