Time travel to the Carboniferous at Kyffhäuser
Lecture at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz on 17 May, 6.30 pm
"Barbarossa's wooden tomb as a window into the Carboniferous period at Kyffhäuser" is the title of the public evening lecture, which will take place on 17 May at 6.30 pm in the Tietz event hall on the 3rd floor. Admission is free.
Dr Ronny Rößler, Director of the Museum of Natural History, will take the audience on an imaginary journey back in time to the Carboniferous period, when the Kyffhäuser region was a subtropical river landscape with giant trees.
The fossilised trees of the Kyffhäuser, which stand in numerous gardens, built into walls and piled up to form obelisks, characterise the image of an entire region, are fossil treasures. And although these natural treasures have been researched since the beginning of palaeobotany (the science of fossil plants), little is known about them:
What kind of trees were they? How did they turn to stone? Why are they in the red sandstones? Evidence is collected from the rocks in a criminalistic manner and pieced together to form an overall picture.
