Tierpark Chemnitz: New residents on the hoofed animal mountain
New arrivals and offspring among the Bactrian camels
On Monday, the staff at the Chemnitz zoo welcomed a new resident. The Bactrian camel mare "Vicky", who is just over a year old, came to Chemnitz from the Opel Zoo in Kronberg. She survived the almost 400 kilometre journey very well.
Vicky spent the first night in her own box in the stable, within sight, hearing and smelling distance of the other Bactrian camels. The very next morning, "Vicky" was allowed to join her fellow Bactrian camels in the large outdoor enclosure. Getting to know her went smoothly, only the mare "Djascha", who has only been living at the zoo for just under six months, is still a little sceptical about the new arrival. But that's normal. The animals are given both the time and the space to get to know each other or to get out of each other's way.
A week earlier, the Bactrian camel mare "Merle" had already given birth to a male foal. This is the second foal for "Merle". The foal was named "Genghis II" in honour of his deceased father.
With the two new residents, the herd of Bactrian camels at Chemnitz Zoo now comprises four animals.
