Three women's lives in Stalinist times
Reading with Eleonora Hummel on 24 September in the Central Library
Dresden author Eleonora Hummel will be reading from her novel "In good hands, in a beautiful country" on 24 September at 6 pm in the Central Library at the TIETZ. It centres on the fate of a woman who is trying to find her way back into life after a long prison sentence in a Soviet labour camp. The event is sponsored by the Robert Bosch Stiftung.
The third novel by Kazakhstan-born Eleonora Hummel is about a family torn apart by the Stalinist system: the girl Vika grows up in a home because her mother Olessia was sent to a labour camp as a bourgeois pest. There, Olessia befriends Nina, who is supposed to look after Vika after her release. When Olessia is also released years later, a three-way relationship develops and the "drama of a life ruined by the (Soviet Communist) state" unfolds, Cornelia Geißler, Frankfurter Rundschau. The author was inspired by the authentic fate of a Ukrainian actress who survived the years of torture in a Kazakh camp, which she learnt about from a newspaper. Eleonora Hummel was born in Kazakhstan in 1970 and moved to Dresden with her family in 1982. She has published three novels to date.
