On Wednesday, 5 February, from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., the City of Chemnitz Commissioner for the Disabled, Petra Liebetrau, together with Delphin Projekte gGmbH, is organising the public symposium "Elternschaft anders denken - 'Wunderwelt' Inklusion" on parental assistance for service providers, beneficiaries and service providers. The event is being organised under the patronage of Susann Rüthrich, Commissioner for Children and Young People of the Saxon State Government.

Starting a family, having children and taking responsibility for yourself and your loved ones - for a lifetime and in a self-determined way - is one of the greatest moments of happiness in many people's lives.
For people with disabilities, however, this is often not a matter of course. Even 15 years after the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities came into force, disability-related limitations are still far too often equated with a lack of parenting and child-rearing skills in Germany. But is this assumption justified?
The symposium "Thinking differently about parenthood - the 'wonder world' of inclusion" is dedicated to these questions. It offers parents with disabilities, service providers, providers of parental assistance and other social services a platform to exchange ideas and learn from each other.
The legal framework is highlighted, specific needs are presented and existing hurdles are discussed. The aim is to find ways to overcome these obstacles and initiate a sustainable dialogue.
