The Treuhand and the economic upheavals in East Germany after 1990

Lecture and discussion on 16 October, 7 to 8.30 pm, online format

On Friday, 16 October, 7 to 8.30 pm, interested parties are invited to a lecture and discussion with historian Dr Marcus Böick, who will use the Treuhand to shed light on the economic upheavals of the time. The event will take place online. The access link will be sent to you after registration. Participation is free of charge. The speaker will present his research, which he has summarised in his book "Die Treuhand. Idea - Practice - Experience 1990-1994". The virtual lecture will be followed by a discussion round.

The Treuhandanstalt was intended to transfer the "state-owned" companies of the GDR into a market economy. This was tantamount to a reorganisation of assets on an unprecedented scale. Sales to mostly West German investors, the liquidation of entire industries and mass redundancies characterised the early 1990s. They were accompanied by angry protests and political controversies. Participants are invited to contribute their personal observations and experiences.

The event is a co-operation between the Evangelisches Forum Chemnitz and the Volkshochschule Chemnitz.
