"The thin skin of the earth - our soils"
Invitation to the exhibition opening at the Museum of Natural History
On Tuesday, 24 November 2015 at 5 p.m., the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz will open the travelling exhibition "The Thin Skin of the Earth - Our Soils" to mark the International Year of Soils. Detailed models and numerous originals provide information about the diversity of soils - today and 291 million years ago. For the first time, visitors will gain an insight into the soil on which the Chemnitz Petrified Forest grew. The exhibition is presented in co-operation with the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz. Admission to the exhibition opening is free.
Following the initial presentation in the EU Parliament in Brussels, Chemnitz is the first location for the travelling exhibition. Coordinated by the Senckenberg Museum für Naturkunde Görlitz, the exhibition will continue to tour Europe after Chemnitz.
Soil is a fascinating resource. Soil is the basis of all life. Without soil there would be no plants and without plants there would be neither food nor oxygen. Despite these facts, soils have been little researched to date. Two thirds of all known species live in soil. Even a single screw-top jar full of soil harbours more organisms than there are people living on earth.
