Patricia Holland Moritz will be a guest at the TIETZ on Thursday, 9 September at 7 pm. The author, who was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, will read from her novel "Kaßbergen". The novel centres on an East German industrial town at the foot of a mountain full of ore in the mid-1970s: after her parents separate, little Ulrike moves in with her father in Kaßbergen, a district above the city's chimneys where the air is better and people tell each other stories of a glorious past behind closed doors. Ulrike soon begins to break out of the confines and meets Gonzo, a punk who introduces her to the world of artists and writers, the non-conformists. When he is arrested by the Stasi, Ulrike is left to her own devices.
A coming-of-age novel that portrays a piece of contemporary German history. Patricia Holland Moritz tells the story of a girl who has to explore the past of her family and her town in order to find her own way into the future.
Patricia Holland Moritz was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt. She worked as a bookseller in Leipzig, then left the GDR and worked as a haulage clerk in Paris. She later studied North American Studies in Berlin, became a tour organiser for various bands and worked at Ullstein Verlag for over two decades. Today Patricia Holland Moritz lives as a freelance writer in Berlin.
