The role of election promises in democracies

On Thursday, 19 October, from 7 to 8.30 pm, the Volkshochschule invites interested parties to a discussion on the importance of election and coalition promises in democracies, especially in Germany. The focus will be on the question of how much trust voters can have in political promises. The political scientist Jun.-Prof. Dr Theres Matthieß will provide an insight into current research.

If a common prejudice is that parties only promise "the blue sky", especially before elections, this can be empirically verified. While research shows that political parties often fulfil the majority of their promises, citizens and the media often perceive this differently.
The speaker will explore the reasons for these different perceptions. She would like to enter into dialogue with the participants about the role of election promises in the past and provide information on current developments. Junior Professor Dr Theres Matthieß was born in Dresden and currently researches and teaches at the University of Trier. She will give a brief insight into her research and will then be available for an open dialogue.
This event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "Controversial on Site" project. It is also a contribution to the European Week of Local Democracy.
