We have forgotten how society works - and not just in East Germany. So says Dirk Neubauer, Mayor of Augustusburg since 2013. What he found in the town after his election was a lack of transparency, disenchantment with politics and a feeling of being lost. Neubauer is convinced that - contrary to popular opinion - the political system can be changed from within and that we can learn again what it means to take personal responsibility instead of handing it over to the state. His projects for Augustusburg, which focus on citizen participation, show this: Citizen involvement, which used to receive little attention, is growing slowly but steadily.

Dirk Neubauer, born in 1971, has been mayor of the town of Augustusburg since October 2013. Starting out as a non-party member, he became an SPD member in 2017. Born in Halle, he initially embarked on a career in journalism in 1993, working for around ten years as a reporter and later as managing director of a local TV station. After two years as head of marketing at mdr jump and sputnik, he became self-employed. He developed concepts for portal solutions for newspaper publishers. He is currently working on a concept for more citizen participation at state level for the Saxon SPD and is in favour of a state-wide digital concept. He has launched the #diStadt project for Augustusburg.
