The history of the Red Tower visible in the cityscape
Information stele to be installed at the town's landmark on Friday
On Friday, 6 November, an information stele will be installed on the Red Tower. It explains the oldest building in the city centre in more detail: When exactly was the Red Tower built? Why is it even called the Red Tower? How has it characterised the cityscape over the years? The key facts are summarised on the stele and also translated into English.
In addition to the information about the Red Tower, the town fortifications from the 13th century onwards are also described. Further stelae are currently being prepared for the former city wall, which will be erected in the coming months and describe the former five gates of the city. The locations are the Johannistor in connection with the former Beckerplatz, the Chemnitzer Tor near today's Moritzhof, the Nikolaitor and Falkeplatz, the gate with the former Paulikirche and the Klostertor on today's Theaterstraße. The design of the stelae at the city gates is based on the stele at the market and in Turnstraße, but they do not have any digital functions.
Various partners are involved in the project under the leadership of the Mayor's Office. The texts were compiled by the Chemnitz History Society and the images were researched by the Chemnitz City Archive. The Department of Monument Protection in the Building Permit Office, the Association of Tour Guides and the Chemnitz Business Promotion and Development Company (CWE) provided advice. The Rotary Club of Chemnitz is also represented on the stele with its "Great Chemnitzers" project. The costs for the stele, totalling 2,400 euros, were financed from the city budget.
