The history of the quarries in Chemnitz and the surrounding area

The next event in the series "The City Archive presents" will take place on Wednesday, 17 September at 6 pm in the City Archive building (Aue 16, 09112 Chemnitz). The speaker this time will be geoscientist and historian Dr Dr Frieder Jentsch, who will talk about "Indispensablefor urban development in the imperial era: quarries in Chemnitz and the surrounding area". Admission to the lecture is free.
About the lecture: The Chemnitz region has a rich tradition of quarrying various types of stone, particularly from the period of industrialisation, when not only large factories but also entire city districts were built. One of the large quarry areas was the Zeisigwald. Using original excerpts from files from the Chemnitz City Archives and the Saxon State Archives, the lecture offers insights into the extraction of the stones, the struggle for the quarrying areas and the working and living conditions of the quarry workers.

Users of the Chemnitz City Archives should note that the City Archives will be closed from 18 September to 26 September due to technical work to remove and return archive material in connection with the refitting of a storage room.
