The history of the name Kaßberg in Chemnitz
Lecture evening organised by the Chemnitz City Archives and History Society - at the SMAC on 28 September, 6 pm
On Thursday, 28 September 2017, 6 pm, the City Archive and the Chemnitz History Society are jointly hosting a lecture evening in the series "The City Archive presents" in the rooms of the Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology, Stefan-Heym-Platz 1. Admission is free.
Prof Dr Karlheinz Hengst, onomastics expert and regional historian, University of Leipzig, will speak about "The history of the name Kaßberg in Chemnitz".
The strikingly unique name for the elevation not far from today's Schlossberg in Chemnitz has led to repeated searches for the original linguistic form and its meaning since the Reformation period. Efforts to date have not led to any convincing results. On the basis of settlement history facts in connection with the activities of the wolf hunters on the Chemnitz and the founding of the monastery in the 12th century, a well-founded explanation is given for the mountain name, which has been handed down since 1402.
