The Guttmann family visits Chemnitz
Invitation to the photo session on 23 June, 12 noon, Theaterstraße 40
On Thursday, 23 June at 12 noon, Uri Guttmann will visit the two Stolpersteine that were laid for his parents Heinrich and Ilse Guttmann on 5 October 2020 at Theaterstraße 40.
Uri Guttmann, who lives in Israel, was unable to attend the laying at the time. He is now accompanied by his wife and son. They will meet historian Dr Jürgen Nitsche, the project manager of the Stolpersteine working group Cornelia Siegel and pupils from Georgius Agricola High School, among others.
Media representatives are cordially invited to a press and photo session. The meeting point is at the stumbling stones of Heinrich and Ilse Guttmann at Theaterstraße 40.
The Jewish Guttmann family ran a shop for men's and boys' wardrobes, which was founded in 1893 and was located at Theaterstraße 34 from 1903. Heinrich Guttmann was taken into "protective custody" in March 1933 because he was involved with the German League for Human Rights in Chemnitz. His business was also affected by the Nazi boycott of Jewish goods, so he gave up in the summer of 1934 and emigrated to Italy. Four years later, his wife and son were able to follow him. They finally emigrated to Palestine in 1939. While their son remained there, Heinrich and Ilse Guttmann returned to Germany in 1958 and lived in Frankfurt am Main until their deaths.
