The future of the city centre

Results of the public participation - Phase 1

Over the past few months, various formats and events have taken place to which the people of Chemnitz were invited to participate in planning the future of the city centre. Many Chemnitz residents accepted the invitation and contributed their ideas and suggestions to the planning process.
The questions that took centre stage in the first participation phase were: What is desirable in the city centre? What tasks must the city centre take on in order to further strengthen Chemnitz as a city as a whole? How can the city centre remain attractive for residents, visitors and newcomers? Where do the urban qualities of the city centre need to be readjusted?

Almost 40 people took part in the public citizens' event on 5 December 2023, while an online dialogue with 440 participants took place over a period of four weeks. There was also participation for people with disabilities and a youth dialogue. In addition, discussions were held with committed associations, political representatives and other stakeholders.

As a result, these events have shown: The people of Chemnitz want to help shape their city centre. Despite its image problem, they see the city centre as a place with potential. The numerous gastronomic and cultural offerings in particular were rated positively.

In detail, the people of Chemitz would like to see a greener, pedestrian-friendly city centre by the river with a high quality of stay, smaller special shops, cafés and offers for different age groups, the expansion of the cycling infrastructure and the removal of the Bahnhofstraße barrier. Other wishes include intergenerational offers, safe and barrier-free footpath connections, after-work activities, offers for young people and children, play and sports facilities and consumer-free meeting places.

In addition to the activation of the Chemnitz riverside, Brückenstraße, Seeberplatz and the central bus stop were often cited as focal points.

And so it continues:
The results of the participation will be published promptly at www.chemnitz.de. In the next phase of the process, scenarios and a vision for the city centre will be developed. These results will also be presented and discussed.

The next public participation is planned for 5 June 2024. All Chemnitz residents are invited to attend. The time and place will be announced in good time.

All those who were unable to take part in the previous formats but would still like to participate are welcome to send their ideas and suggestions for the city centre to the City Planning Office by email to innenstadtdialog(at)stadt-chemnitz.de.
