The "Fritz Heckert" residential area - the 1970s to 1990s

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites you to an online lecture on the history of the "Fritz Heckert" residential area in Chemnitz on Wednesday, 2 June 2021, from 7 to 8.30 pm. The civil engineer, landscape architect and author Norbert Engst will focus in particular on the 1970s to 1990s using numerous images. Participation is free of charge. The Fritz Heckert area was the third largest new housing estate in the GDR. The laying of the foundation stone in October 1974 was followed by a long construction process until 1989. Eight construction areas and over 900 buildings were erected. Parallel to the construction work, a diverse life developed in the pedestrian zones, on Ikarus Boulevard and in the backyards.
The lecture will focus on the development of the Fritz Heckert area and the everyday experiences of its residents. You can share your own memories in the discussion. Norbert Engst is the author of the book "Das Wohngebiet 'Fritz Heckert'. Bauen in neuen Dimensionen", which was published in 2019 as the twelfth volume in the Chemnitz City Archive series. He was awarded the Saxon State Prize for Local History Research in 2020, among other honours.
The event is part of the series "Places of Historical Remembrance" in the summer semester 2021 at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
