The education of taste. A historical search for clues
VHS@home: Online lecture on 21 October, 7.30 to 9 p.m.
On Thursday, 21 October, from 7.30 to 9 p.m., the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites interested parties to an online lecture on the history of taste. The historian and author Prof Dr Ulrich Raulff will take you on a historical journey around the changes in good and bad taste.
Attendance is free of charge. Registration is possible until the day before the event at www.vhs-chemnitz.de or 0371 488-4343. An access link will be sent by e-mail on the day of the event.
Taste doesn't just play a role in the kitchen and at the dining table. Liking beautiful things is also evidence of a change in taste. At the latest when you realise how social media has become a sounding board for taste, where likes are given or refused, it becomes clear that the history of taste is not over. In fact, most people are guided by their likes or dislikes, sometimes against reason. Close to the senses, far from the mind, taste is difficult to grasp. Since the 18th century, it has not only been the subject of philosophical debate.
In his online lecture, Prof Dr Ulrich Raulff traces the history of this change. The speaker was features editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and senior editor in the features section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. From 2004 to 2018, Raulff was Director of the German Literature Archive in Marbach. He has been President of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations since October 2018.
The event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the VHS Chemnitz and the adult education centres Landkreis Erding and SüdOst im Landkreis München.
