The pre-Christmas season in Chemnitz begins every year in mid-November with the erection of the large Christmas spruce on the market square by the town hall: the date this year is Saturday, 14 November. According to advance information from the Parks Department, a magnificent spruce, this time around 28 metres tall, is expected to be erected in the afternoon.
After felling, loading and transport, the low-loader is expected to arrive from 3 p.m. at the earliest, accompanied by officers from the Chemnitz-Erzgebirge police department. As last year, the transport route in Chemnitz leads from the Chemnitz/Mitte junction via the B 95/Leipziger Straße, Hartmannstraße, Theaterstraße into Innere Klosterstraße to the market.
Until the tree arrives, the waiting time will be shortened by a pre-Christmas event organised by the market authorities: with barbecue and mulled wine fun including a children's carousel for the youngest.
The main attraction of the day, the Chemnitz Christmas spruce 2015, is around 70 to 80 years old and around 28 metres high and is described as a well-grown tree with dense, green needles. The exact age and length can only be determined after the tree has been felled by counting the annual rings and measuring it at ground level.
With these measurements, however, Chemnitz will probably once again be well ahead in the annual Christmas tree rankings in Saxony.
The 2015 Chemnitz Christmas tree was selected by the City of Chemnitz Parks Department, represented by Kerstin König, in collaboration with forestry office manager Hansi-Heike Lerche from the Sachsenforst state enterprise/ Adorf forest district (Auerbach/Vogtl.) and district forester Matthias Zollfrank. This time, the tree was searched for and found in heavy fog on the Kammweg in the Auerbach forest district. The spruce will be felled here on 14 November by Techno-Farm und Service GmbH Neukirchen/Adorf, a company commissioned by the Parks Department. The experienced company was awarded the contract following an invitation to tender.
