The Böll family in Ireland and the Irish Diary
Lecture with René Böll on the occasion of Heinrich Böll's 100th birthday
Heinrich Böll would have been 100 years old in December 2017 - to mark the occasion, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is hosting a book reading with René Böll, Heinrich Böll's son, on Monday, 4 December at 7 pm. Admission is free.
The writer and Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll bought a cottage in Dugort on Achill Island in 1958 and lived and worked there until the mid-1970s. In his lecture on the Böll family's stays on Achill Island, his son, René Böll, explains how the family experienced Ireland from 1955 onwards and how their close connection to this place of residence developed to this day. This is illustrated by letters, documents, notes and photos, most of which come from the family album from the 1950s and 1960s.
The painter and artist René Böll takes us on a mental walk to the places that also appear in the "Irish Diary" and supplements this with personal memories of the Böll family's life on Achill Island. Böll Cottage has been used as a guest house for international and Irish artists since 1992.
This event is a cooperation between the educational organisation "weiterdenken" at the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
To accompany the event, an exhibition on the life and work of Heinrich Böll has been on display on the 4th floor of the TIETZ since 20 November.
