In December, the adult education centre invites all interested parties to a two-part series of events on listening. How does good listening work, especially in controversial or politically heated debates? How can listening contribute to mutual understanding? Two lectures will explore these questions.

On Tuesday, 2 December at 7 p.m., Prof. Dr Margarete Imhof will ask about the conditions for successful communication. The speaker is a senior professor of psychology in education at the University of Mainz and has been researching the topics of the evening for many decades. The lecture and discussion will explore what makes for good listening. Why is listening sometimes difficult? What happens in the human brain? Can good listening be learnt? And last but not least: How can listening promote dialogue across controversies?

On Monday 8 December at 7 pm, Prof. Dr Bernhard Pörksen will present his widely received book "Zuhören. The art of opening up to the world". Based on selected media debates of recent years, the renowned media scientist at the University of Tübingen formulates a school of perception: What does it mean to really listen, to question one's own convictions, to expose oneself to the world view of another? It becomes clear which mechanisms prevent people from listening - whether in private or in public. He also presents approaches and methods that enable a new openness, deeper understanding and empathetic listening.
