The Armenians, the First World War and the consequences
Reading and discussion with Dr Corry Guttstatt
On Tuesday, 10 November 2015 at 7 p.m., Turkologist Dr Corry Guttstadt will be reading from a collection of literary, often autobiographical texts by Armenians at the adult education centre in the TIETZ event hall. The event is taking place in remembrance of the mass murder of Armenians committed in the shadow of the First World War, which this year marks the hundredth anniversary. Admission is free.
The texts were written by survivors of the deportations, including well-known Armenian writers such as Yervant Odian, but also by people such as Pailadzo Captanian, who wrote out of a need to bear witness to the unimaginable atrocities they experienced.
Dr Corry Guttstadt studied Turkology and History at the University of Hamburg. Her research focusses on the situation of ethnic and religious minorities in Turkey. Her dissertation "Turkey, the Jews and the Holocaust" has become an international standard work on the subject.
